ALL-NEW 2023 Range Rover Sport | Luxury PHEV!!

Overview

Opulent luxury and off-road capabilities rarely result in overlapping Venn diagrams, but that narrow intersection is precisely where the fully redesigned 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport calls home. In the Land Rover lineup, it sits between the more expensive full-sized Range Rover and the smaller Velar. Beyond the Land Rover brand, there really aren't any direct competitors that deliver the same level of luxury adventure, though the Lexus LX 600 comes close.

That begs the question of whether you really need that much off-road prowess, as the Range Rover Sport costs as much as $20,000 more than a city-bound Mercedes-Benz GLE and $10,000 more than a base Porsche Cayenne. If you can justify the need or additional expense, you'll be treated to one of the few vehicles that is as well-mannered on the road as it is capable off pavement.

What's New for 2023

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport is all-new for 2023. Styling has been revamped inside and out, there are plenty of new tech features, and a powerful plug-in hybrid version debuts.

Trims and Pricing

The 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is available in four trim levels: SE, SE Dynamic, Autobiography, and First Edition. These trim levels are differentiated both by their engines and feature content. The Autobiography is the popular model, but the entry-level SE model gets our recommendation, as detailed below.

 SE

The base SE is anything but basic. For $84,350, you get a comprehensive list of standard features that include 21-inch wheels, an adaptive air suspension, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats, power-reclining heated rear seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, a 13.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a digital instrument panel.

Standard safety features include adaptive cruise control, frontal-collision mitigation, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, lane-keeping assist, a traffic sign reader, ClearSight Ground View (shows the terrain directly in front and under the vehicle), a wading-depth monitor, automatic high beams, and a drowsy driver monitor.

The Range Rover Sport SE has plenty of power for most drivers, and its long features list can be expanded with an equally impressive options menu. Pricing is comparable to the Lexus LX 600 and quite a bit more expensive than other luxury SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz GLE or Porsche Cayenne. But the higher trim Sport models are even more expensive, which might make a full-size Range Rover the more sensible option.

SE Dynamic

The SE Dynamic costs $91,350 and increases power output from the same engine in the SE. You also get the Terrain Response 2 system to aid in off-roading, as well as Copper accents on exterior and interior trim elements.

Autobiography

The Autobiography makes a big jump in price as well as propulsion. The $105,550 price tag adds a plug-in hybrid drivetrain along with a two-speed transfer case. Other standard features include 22-inch wheels, a contrasting black roof, soft-close doors, premium leather upholstery, massaging front seats, quad-zone automatic climate control, a head-up display, a virtual mirror, interior ambient lighting, premium surround audio, an automated parking system, all-wheel steering, the Dynamic Response Pro system for improved handling, and an electronic differential for better traction.

Engine and Performance

The base SE is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine paired with a mild hybrid system for a combined output of 355 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. Land Rover estimates it will accelerate to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, which is slightly quicker than the Lexus LX 600 and comparable to the six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz GLE. The SE Dynamic squeezes a bit more power from the same engine, resulting in 395 hp and 406 lb-ft. Land Rover says it will reach 60 mph in 5.4 seconds.

The Autobiography goes green with its plug-in hybrid system that produces 434 hp and 619 lb-ft of torque. On a full battery charge, it should return 48 miles of electric-only propulsion, and it's estimated to hit 60 mph in 5.5 seconds.

Fuel Economy

Land Rover estimates the 2023 Range Rover Sport SE and SE Dynamic should return 20 mpg during city driving and 25 mpg on the highway, while the potent V8 is rated at 15/20 mpg city/highway. That compares favorably to the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic, which is estimated at 20/25 mpg city/highway, while the Porsche Cayenne and Lexus LX 600 are listed at 17/22 mpg. Charge times for the plug-in hybrid are not yet available.
